Prime Day 2019 - A Skateboarder's Guide

It’s the best time of the summer, skate fam! No, we’re not talking fireworks, hotdogs, and 4th of July festivities. Not even beach camping, or late nights out on the lake. Fellow skaters, it’s almost time for PRIME DAY! Unless you’ve been living in a cave (hopefully not), you’re likely familiar with the 36-hour-long event (it starts Monday, July 15 at 12 am) that mean big deals and even bigger savings. Whether this is new news or old hat to you, we’re going to lay out everything you need to know to ROCK Prime Day 2019!

Amazon’s once-yearly sale is akin to Black Friday. Items will be deeply discounted until they are no longer in stock or until the sale is over. However, as the name indicates, Prime Day is only for Amazon Prime members. This hurdle is easily tackled by signing up for the free 30-day trial. Just make sure you unsubscribe before auto-billing begins on the 31st day. Or don’t cancel because we’re pretty confident you’ll make good use of all the perks over time. At $119/year (and only $59/year for students with a valid ID!), it costs you far less than one coffee per week, and you’ll receive innumerable benefits from free shipping to exclusive TV programming to one-click ordering. A note on one-click ordering: turn it on and make sure it’s working before Prime Day officially begins. You want to make sure you’re able to swoop from deal to deal hassle-free. Don’t get stuck mucking around at checkout! And if you’re so inclined, consider setting up an account at smile.amazon.com. You’ll have the exact same shopping experience; the only difference is that a charity of your choice will receive a percentage of the sale when you purchase in this manner. What feels better than scoring a crazy deal? Helping others while you save money, that’s what!

In years prior, we’ve done a bunch of crazy shopping (also known as "research") to be able to predict in advance what the very best deals for skaters will be in 2019. Almost everything will be on sale, but these are the items that are topping our lists and have a history of deep discounts!

Deals on Boards

There will be plenty of deals to be had on actual skateboards this year. If you’ve been thinking of investing in your first one, or just itching to buy another, this is the time! These deals will run the gamut from ultra-short boards (you can nab a Penny board in just about any color combo you can dream up!) to 46” dancing longboards and everything in between. If you’re looking for a basic board that will stand the test of time, check out the Retrospec Alameda. This board comes fully assembled and street-ready. It’s already a screaming deal at under $40, but it’s sure to dive deeper on Prime Day!

If longboards are more your jam, we hear you! We dig the lines and the ride on the Quest Super Cruiser 44.” With a beautiful clean design and another lower price point (under $60 regular price!), you’ll be happy you tried Quest. If longboard dancing is your style, give the Rimable Dancing Longboard a try. It’s colorful space-age design, and extended length will have you boardwalk ready in no time. At just $80, it’s still a great deal on a quality board. And if you’re not quite ready to buy a full-size board just yet, take the leap and pick up a People’s Republic wooden fingerboard. It’ll get you almost as much fun on wheels as a real board… almost ;)

Safety Gear

We know it’s essential to be safe out there when you’re skating. After all, we share the road with cars and bicycles, and we share sidewalks and skateparks with other skaters and pedestrians. Keep yourself and others safe (and stylish) with the best gear. For sunny summer skate sessions, you can’t beat the Triple 8 Sweat Saver Helmet that comes with a built-in washable liner, so your aroma doesn't repel others when you take it off after a good shred – you’re welcome. It comes in a variety of colors, but the black and red model has us adding this one to our Prime Day wishlist. While we’re repping safety gear, you may as well make mom happy and pick up some JBM knee/elbow pads & wrist guards to protect yourself. If you’re worried they’ll ruin your mojo, use this as a reason to step up your skate trick game and try that next-level stunt you’ve been dreaming about.

Skate Gear

Now that you’re safe, you might as well be prepared and stylin, right? A Skateboard backpack is essential for when you ride, and if you don’t have one or you need another (there’s always a good reason, right?) we always recommend a Dakine. This classic model comes in 14 colors and features a padded laptop sleeve and insulated cooler pouch. If you take care of it, you could have this backpack for years!

If night shreds are part of your jam, you need a set (or two!) of Board Blazers! These LED lights are powered with a simple button battery and attach to the underside of your board near the trucks. They’ll illuminate your night skate and make you feel like you’re surfing the streets on puddles of light. With color options that range from Lightning Lime to Crazy Color Changing, you won’t be disappointed. Plus prices are always slashed for Prime Day!

If you want to pump up the extreme factor in your skating, consider investing in a personal ramp or rail. While these pieces can be an investment, Prime Day will bring them to a more affordable price point, and there’s never been a better time to take the plunge. The Ramptech 2’ tall and 4’ wide quarter-pipe ramp will fit easily in a driveway and allow you to skip the skatepark a few nights a week. Why wait your turn when you can have your own setup? It’s easy to place in position and relatively simple to store. While you’re at it, grab the X factor 54” grind rail and practice your board slides until they’re perfect! You’ll have your own skatepark with no waiting in line and no pressure for perfection. Worth it!

Prime day is less than a week away! Make sure you’re prepared with your Prime membership, one-click ordering, and a list of everything you want. Or just use this handy list to help you purchase. We’re here for you, man. Now get out there and seize the deals, skate fam!

Back to School Guide for Skaters

It’s that time again! The smell of freshly sharpened pencils is in the air, and the last vestiges of summer freedom are passing away - it’s Back To School Season! It’s easy to get stressed and stymied with back to school shopping, so we’re here today to help you check off your list from the comfort of your seat. This one-stop shop for skaters going back to school should have you prepped and ready to shred (and study)! We’ve compiled all of our favorite gear to set your skater up for schoolyard and classroom success. From safety gear to clothing, book covers and pencil cases to tech accessories – we’ve got you covered. So sit back, relax, and check off your back to school shopping list one click at a time!

You can’t go to school without a way to carry your books AND your board! Two of our very favorite brands have killer backpacks that will not only tote your school books but your skateboard too. First up, our all-time favorite skate backpack, the Dakine Atlas. Man, this bag is such a workhorse! Known for quality, and sleek modern design, you straight can’t go wrong with this bag. With a little care, it could serve you for a few years – it’s built to last! But lately, we’ve been rather taken with this second option, the Vans Jetter Carry All. The pop of red and the slightly larger size have us rethinking our backpack loyalties. Either of these bags is an excellent choice and will serve your skater well!

Skateboarding is crazy fun, but you've got to be prepared with the correct safety gear. If your student is skating to school (can't decide if they’re ready? We can help!), you're going to need something to keep that noggin safe! We always recommend the JBM Skateboard Helmet for its high customer satisfaction, availability of colors and styles, and long-term durability. It’s a classic look that will carry your skater through many years of school. Looks fresh, great investment, win-win! Similarly, a fly pair of knee pads (yes, they can be cool!) will keep those knees so fresh and so clean (clean). We’re digging the 187 Killer Pads. The white on black contrast is a statement maker. If you’re going to cover their knees, they might as well look sick doing it, and the 187s are a sure fire way to do it!

You can’t back to school shop without picking up some sick duds for your skater. And while we probably can’t save you from that dreaded (or maybe enjoyable?) trip to Target or Old Navy, we can help you out with a few items. Any skater who is anyone has a legit HUF hoodie, and this one is CLASSIC. Your skater will earn instant street cred with his crew when he sports this HUF box logo hoodie. Stay warm and look sick! And no skater should be without a pair of classic Thrasher skate socks. If you’ve got a skater in the house, then you’re probably already familiar with the mid-calf socks so iconic to the sport. But if you haven’t yet done so, spring for at least a two pack of the real deal. Thrasher socks are indispensable style statements in the skating world. Give your skater a leg up with his crew for under $20. You'll be glad you did.

Got a skater with a smartphone? Skip the overtly “skateboardy” phone covers and go for this understated phone case made of recycled skate decks. Each one is unique, and while it can’t keep your student from texting in class, it will keep him on the edge of style!

Now, what would a Back To School guide be without school supplies? Look no further, folks! First up we have this ultra-rad set of 2 pocket folders. With many schools now requiring you to purchase your own classroom supplies, keep your shredder stocked in skateboard style with TEN 2 pocket folders for each subject. You can’t be over prepared! Need composition notebooks? Why settle for the old black and white marbled pattern, when you could have black on blue skater silhouettes! Most classes will require a notebook or journal of some kind, and these will set your skater apart. With 100 pages of lined paper, students can fill the pages with brain food, while still repping their love of the shred. Have a kiddo who is tough on the textbooks? Keep their school gear in mint condition with The Original Book Sox in skateboard motif! These stretchy nylon book covers will expand to fit textbooks of nearly any size, keeping them from bumps and bruises and they travel from locker to classroom to home and back again. And for even further customization of school supplies, we recommend this 100 pack of skateboard stickers. They aren’t just for boards! Your student can customize their supplies with these rad stickers, covering their notebooks, binders, pencil cases – you name it!

Speaking of pencils and cases, here are a few that we dig! The Inkology pencil pouch will fit snugly inside a three-ring binder and keep all those writing implements corralled... until they disappear as they always do. If your skater isn’t much for binders, the navy blue BHRETI pencil case stows easily inside a backpack. With a slim design and a sweet skateboarding patch attached, it’s sure to please. Preempt the running-out-of-eraser problem by picking up a few of these super fun two-pack of rubber skateboard erasers. They’ll never peeve their teacher by scratching out an answer when they should have erased, and they’ll enjoy erasing that much more when they’re reminded of their favorite pastime. And how cool is this design? These little skateboard erasers actually roll!

All work and no play makes Johnny a dull (and miserable) boy. While you’re grabbing school supplies, why not nab a few small things to keep the summer fun alive while taking those needed study breaks? For lunchtime at school or a homework break, The People’s Republic fingerboard will let them enjoy skateboarding, but with no need for the full sized board! Mastering the art of the skate fingerboard will entertain for hours and remind them of their love of the real deal. Once the sun has set, and the homework is packed away for the night, head out for a fun shred session with a new set of Board Blazers! These LED underglow lights attach easily to the underside of your skate deck and provide hours of skateboarding fun in style and safety. Keep their shred sessions LIT with board Blazers!

But what if it’s time for a new board entirely? A new set of wheels doesn’t just mean a car, you know! If you’re looking for a new all-inclusive skateboard package, the Minority 32 inch maple board is a great option. With sick deck artwork and a solid setup, your skater will be glad to have this in his arsenal. Want to help your skater branch out? Consider a Penny Board! These short boards (a solid 10+ inches shorter than a standard board) are entirely acrylic, come in WILD colors, and will give your skater something new to master! Shortboards are easier to tote and will make certain tricks and flips easier to accomplish. At a super accessible price point, a Penny board will give your skater a new challenge. If shortboards aren’t their style, consider a longboard! This Ten Toes Bamboo Longboard will introduce them to the wide world of longboarding. Cruising, dancing, downhill, the forms of longboarding are endless and will provide your skater with access to an entirely new sector of the sport. Longboards are also ideal for commuting since skaters don’t have to pump their feet as often to maintain speed. For extra points and portability, consider investing in a Board Up Foldable Longboard! It folds in half when not in use and will easily slip into a backpack or locker. If you have a student who plans on skating to school, this will make a killer surprise!

Back to school doesn’t have to be stressful for you and lame for your student. This skate gear will remind them that while school feels long, they can head home to their favorite hobby as soon as that last bell rings. Now go out, complete your school supply shopping and get back home to those last summer shred sessions!

Best Gifts For Skateboarders

Clueless as to what to buy your skater? Don’t know an ollie from a 360 flip? No worries! Whether its holiday gifts, birthday presents, or just a little something from you to say, “YEAH, DUDE! SICK!,” Board Blazers has you covered. Read on to browse our comprehensive gift guide for skaters everywhere!

1. SAFETY GEAR - You knew our top pick had to be safety related. You can’t skateboard without your noggin, so protect that head! Pick up this durable skating helmet for adults, or this rad head protection for the wee ones. An enormous amount of would-be serious head injuries are avoidable if your skater is wearing a properly fitted helmet. Don’t be without it! And while we’re at it, pick up some knee and elbow pads to soften the blows to their joints. We dig this sweet set with gloves for kids and adults (always check sizing charts for accuracy, or head to your local skate shop to make sure items fit correctly for maximum safety!).

2. SKATE LIGHTS - We aren’t going to make you as safe as a helmet, but a little more visibility never hurt anyone, plus you’ll look sick doing it! We’re biased, but we’ll go ahead and say they’re the best out there. Grab some Board Blazers right here.

3. SKATE MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION - If you can’t be out riding all the time, you can at least read about it, am I right?! While there are loads of choices out there for this one, luckily for you, we've created a handy guide for choosing the best skate magazine based on your skater. Check it out here!

4. SKATE SOCKS - This is an easy slam dunk, and awesome add-on or stocking stuffer. Socks won’t break the bank but will make your skater feel like they just took their ride to the next level. We always dig the classic Thrasher socks, but here is another awesome choice!

5. SKATEBOARD STAND – Tired of multiple boards rolling haphazardly around your garage? Problem solved. The Parking Block is like a portable parking space for your board that can travel with you wherever the shred session takes you. We love it!

6. GO PRO – Want to make your skater’s whole life? If you’ve got the cash to drop, a GoPro is definitely an incredible way to go. This lightweight, durable camera is the choice of action sports lovers everywhere for documenting their adventures. Your skater is sure to give you a big, “Thanks, brah!” for this one!

7. SKATEBOARD – There are SO many choices out there for skaters! Longboard, penny board, skateboard, you name it. If you’re not sure which to pick, feel free to peruse our handy guide to buying an inexpensive skateboard online.

8. UPCYCLED SKATE GEAR – is going green your thing? Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. There are incredible options out there now for anything (seriously, anything) upcycled from skateboard decks. These phone cases are super sick, and every skater we know would dig these sunglasses! You could even pick up a sick skateboard shelf for your shredder to store their boards, helmets, and gear.

9. BUILD-AT-HOME RAMP – Is your skater more adventurous? Perhaps a budding engineer? Why not plan to spend some quality time together and grab one of these build-at-home ramp setups? You’ll get some one-on-one time, the chance to use tools, and at the end of the afternoon, your skater will have his or her very own ramp to work on their tricks! No worries about their safety because you’ve already got them in a helmet & safety pads, right (see #1 and #2)?

And while there are endless gift ideas for your skater, we think that these 9 round out a pretty stellar list. You can’t go wrong with these choices! Happy gifting!

How To Choose A Skate Magazine For Kids

While summer is just barely coming to a close, the holiday season is soon to be upon us! If you skate or happen to be a friend/parent/grandparent/super-cool gift-buyer to a skater, then this is just the right place for you. Skate magazine subscriptions are a fantastic way for skaters to stay up with current trends, gear, and pro-ams (professionals and amateurs, as you’ll hear them called at the skate parks or in skate shops). Plus skate magazines often feature trendy music, festivals, and even guides for road trips and popular places to eat. They’re portable, visually enticing and easy to read – what’s not to love?! Below we will profile our top 4 skater mags and help guide you toward which one is perfect for you or your skater.

Thrasher

The first and most well-known skating magazine is without a doubt, Thrasher. It’s rad covers, bright colors, grungy photography and interviews with undoubtedly the world’s best skaters make it the Time Magazine of the skating world. Its content is direct and unashamed, and while skaters LOVE this (super legit!), it can be mature for some audiences. Let’s be clear, in no way does it promote drug usage and alcohol consumption, but there are semi-frequent mentions of these activities. If the skater in your life is younger, you may want to wait until they’re a bit more mature before subscribing here. Thrasher does a killer job at featuring skaters of all levels, interests, and styles. Bonus points as it features a mostly-even split of male and female skaters, which seems difficult to find in other skating periodicals.

BOTTOM LINE: Thrasher is a great all-around choice for the mature skater in your life & delivers regular content. $18/year (includes 12 issues). Click here to subscribe!

The Skateboard Mag

Perhaps the second best-known skating magazine is The Skateboard Mag. This read is more down to earth and applicable for the average skater. While other skate magazines often show glossy pics of skaters performing truly death-defying stunts, and interviews with longtime pros, The Skateboard Mag manages to produce equally visibly engaging content (sick pics!), but with a more realistic spin. The skater in your life is more likely to see moves and tricks here that would be reasonable for them to learn and master. The interviews inside will range from beginners describing how getting into skating is changing to pros who are currently on tour. If you don’t know much about what your skater is capable of, or which type of skating they prefer, a subscription to The Skateboard Mag will be a very safe choice. While the content isn’t as mature as Thrasher, there are still occasional references to illicit behavior, so we recommend screening it for content if your skater is 13 or younger.

BOTTOM LINE: The Skateboard Mag makes skating seem the most accessible and relatable to all skaters over 13(ish). $19.95/year (includes 12 issues). Click here to subscribe!

Skateboarding

Transworld

When it comes to creative yet age-appropriate content, Transworld is the clear winner. Lest it turn off all of you hardcore skaters, let’s be clear: age-appropriate does not mean light on skating content. Transworld has some of the best skate photography in existence, and its articles are engaging and timely. It has been criticized for being heavier on ads than the two previously mentioned periodicals, but the magazine itself is longer, which means it delivers the same amount of good content. This magazine is a killer pick for any skater in your life, regardless of age. A bonus here is that they have an easy-to-download digital magazine if you’d like to save a tree and gift a digital subscription. Do be aware that this mag mails bimonthly, meaning your yearly subscription will buy you six issues.

BOTTOM LINE: Transworld is appropriate for skaters of all levels and ages. A very safe pick. $19.99/year (includes 6 issues). Click here to subscribe!

Low Card Mag

The last skater magazine we’ll feature in this article is slightly less well known than the previous three, but like most underdogs in any industry, they’re fighting hard for a spot with great photography, design, and truly engaging content. Low Card Mag markets themselves as a magazine for only hardcore skaters. They even encourage their subscribers to review the magazine “terrible” and “lame” to keep their readership to only true skateboarders and not posers. It’s a killer periodical in that it’s book sized (very portable), easy to read in one sitting, and features similar content to the other magazines but with an “only for true believers” tilt. It occasionally comes with skate stickers, which is an awesome bonus whether you’re buying it for yourself or giving it as a gift! “Stay lame!” as Low Card Mag subscribers say and snag this for your ultra-legit skater. This magazine is also printed bimonthly (6 issue).

BOTTOM LINE: Low Card Mag is a great up-and-coming magazine with perks (skate stickers!) and loyal following. $18/year (includes 6 issues). Click here to subscribe!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our tour through our favorite 4 skate mags, and hopefully this has made your choice just a bit easier! Stay tuned for more helpful holiday shopping tips for the skater in your life! And as always, if you have feedback, or think we’ve missed a killer magazine, reach out to us via Instagram @BoardBlazers. We’d love to hear about your favorite skate mags!
